from mechanisms to therapy
Since 1997, the International Copper Meeting has focused on genetic, molecular, and biochemical mechanisms underlying copper biology and chemistry in normal physiology and disease and proof-of-concept or clinically tractable means to translate these discoveries. Both basic/translational scientists and clinicians at this conference will be exposed to the emerging concepts in the copper field, including but not limited to advanced tools to study copper biology, structural biology of cuproproteins, copper at the host pathogen interface, intracellular and organismal copper trafficking and storage, and inherited diseases and somatic diseases associated with alterations in copper homeostasis.

This award is named in honor of Professor Arturo Leone, an Italian copper biologist who investigated the cellular and molecular basis of copper metabolism. Professor Leone was a founder of the International Copper Meetings and was very supportive of young scientists entering the field. This award recognizes a young investigator who has not yet been promoted to the rank of Full Professor or equivalent, who has great promise to make long term contributions the field of copper biology, biochemistry, chemistry, and who currently holds or will soon obtain an independent faculty position.
Previous recipients of the Leone Young Investigator Award: Scot Leary, Manuel Gonzalez-Guerrero, Amit Reddi, Simone Ciofi-Baffoni, Helena Öhrvik, Kevin Waldron, Donita Brady
